Christian Rapper

I love the way God speaks to us in a language we can relate to using imagery and words that speak directly to us individually. He spoke to Abraham about his future using the stars in the sky above him and the sand under his feet to convey the magnitude of his legacy. He spoke to the disciples about fish.

I think music is a very personal form of communication because it touches each person in a different way it music conveys praise, it’s a cry in desperation, it’s a reminder of the good and bad about life. So often music has been my refuge; a song that reminds me of a truth I knew but forgot, fills me with joy comforts me in my sadness. It’ a way to express ones love for God as well as reflect on the life that’s been changed because of his love and grace.

I will admit that rap isn’t my usual cup of tea but when someone you love is speaking you want to listen.

I know Tone Spain because several years ago he married my little sister. I know what you’re thinking it’s your brother-in-law of course you would like him. There may be some truth to that but that’s ok I think you should give him a try anyway.

When I met Tony we didn’t say much to each other I’m shy and he seemed to be waking up. In the three years they’ve been together we’ve only seen each other on special occasions but when I decided to start Jasmine’s Corner I thought lets start with someone I know. My goal is to share what people are doing creatively and let you decide if you like them or not.

Tony is a man of God defining himself as a husband and a father but he also has a heart and mission to reach those who might seem unreachable that kid on the corner selling drugs the one trying to figure out where his life is going the young guy who is angry with his addicted mother absent father and friends in the same boat sinking with no lifesavers.

Tony found his life saver after going AWOL from the army. He began to sell drugs on the streets, committed robbery and tried to pass off bad checks in his attempt to live the thug life but not really fitting that description. He got caught trying to cash a bad check and apprehended days later.

He spent three weeks in jail. During that time he was sent to a counselor who had a box of bibles. He thought “Something has to give there has to be something more” he asked that counselor for one of those bibles and spent the next few days reading the Gospels and began his relationship with Jesus. For him Jesus became more then words on a page but someone who was real and at that moment his heart changed.

The rest of his life would start to change slowly.

After leaving jail he had owed the army some time and had to finish basic training and was later discharged. He returned back to some old habits but started to feel convicted and started to look for a church. That’s where he met my sister.

Since then he turned to something he never thought God could use he started to write rap. He used to write in his old life but he used it to defend himself, tear others down and earn respect. He felt empty and as if it was pointless but the same music that touched him and allowed him to release his anger or frustrations had now became a way to express hi relationship with God and how his life had changed. He was speaking a language that the kid on the corner could understand with a heart that wasn’t condemning but could relate. He didn’t want to be preachy nor be a theologian just someone who met Jesus and wanted to share what he knew.

Sometime back he back to share what he wrote and someone suggested he record so he created a the label Servant of Christ Music and became Tone and recorded his first CD Christian Rapper. Click below and take a listen. Encourage them and help them to grow.

Hop back next time.
